Avelize - Shopify Expert Agency

Get cited by AI. Dominate the new era of search.

Future-proof your brand for AI search. We optimize your content to be cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews using data-driven GEO frameworks.

What this page covers

Avelize improves AI search visibility by making content easier for Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT-style systems, Perplexity, and answer engines to extract, summarize, and cite accurately.

When this matters

GEO matters when a brand wants to appear in AI answers, comparison prompts, buyer research flows, and entity-based search experiences beyond classic blue links.

What Avelize improves

  • Answer-first content structure
  • Entity and source coverage
  • FAQ and schema improvements
  • AI-readable commercial pages

How Avelize works

  1. Diagnose: We review the current storefront, crawl paths, analytics, customer journey, and business constraints before recommending changes.
  2. Prioritize: We rank fixes by revenue impact, crawlability, conversion risk, implementation effort, and launch safety.
  3. Implement: We ship controlled improvements in code, content, UX, schema, internal links, or integrations depending on the page goal.
  4. Measure: We validate the outcome through Search Console, analytics, QA checks, and follow-up optimization.

How AI search actually selects its sources

Two mechanisms decide whether a page is used in an AI answer. Retrieval-augmented generation means the model does not answer from memory — it retrieves pages from a search index and grounds its response in them. Query fan-out means the system issues several related searches around the wording a person typed, not only the literal phrase.

The practical consequence is that Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are extensions of Google Search rather than a separate engine. They use the same index, the same crawling and the same quality systems. A page Google cannot crawl, render or understand is not a candidate for citation, however it is written.

ChatGPT and Perplexity draw from a wider pool and are less tied to conventional ranking position, which is why a page on the second or third results page can still be cited when its structure makes the answer easy to extract.

What the research shows about getting cited

A 2024 study presented at KDD measured nine optimisation methods against generative engines and ranked them by the visibility each produced:

Optimisation methods ranked by measured visibility gain
MethodEffect on visibility
Citing authoritative sourcesLargest gain, around +40%
Adding statistics with attributionAround +37%
Direct quotations from named expertsAround +30%
Keyword stuffingAround −10%: it actively costs citations

The pattern is consistent. Generative engines favour content that behaves like a source rather than content that behaves like an advertisement, and lower-authority domains benefit most — which matters for brands that cannot outrank incumbents on links alone.

What GEO is not

Several tactics circulate as GEO best practice without support from the platforms themselves. Being clear about them saves budget:

  • llms.txt does not influence Google Search. Google has said it does not use the file for Search or its AI features. Publishing one for other agents is reasonable; treating it as a ranking lever is not.
  • There is no special AI writing style. Rewriting pages into a machine-flavoured register does not increase citation. Clear, well-sourced writing does.
  • Content does not need chunking into fragments for retrieval. Naturally organised pages with meaningful headings are enough.
  • Generating a page for every predicted fan-out query produces thin, near-duplicate pages and triggers spam signals. Fewer, stronger pages outperform many weak ones.

A useful test: if a tactic does not also improve the page for a human reader, or its crawlability and clarity for a search engine, it is probably noise.

Why third-party mentions often outweigh your own site

Brands are considerably more likely to be cited through sources they do not own than through their own domain. Wikipedia accounts for a meaningful share of ChatGPT citations, and community discussion, industry publications, review platforms and video regularly appear in AI answers where a vendor's own marketing pages do not.

That changes where effort belongs. One accurate entry on a widely trusted reference site, or genuine participation where practitioners discuss the problem, can carry more citation weight than another page of on-site copy. GEO work that ignores off-site presence is optimising the smaller half of the problem.
