Why title tags matter

Title tags help search engines understand page focus and help searchers decide whether a result matches their intent. Strong titles are specific, concise, and aligned with the page H1 and content.

Why character count is only an approximation

Search results truncate titles by pixel width, not character count. Google's desktop results allow roughly 600 pixels, which is why a title of capital letters and wide characters gets cut earlier than one of the same length in narrow characters.

The 55 to 60 character guidance is a useful proxy because most titles sit near the average character width, but it is a guide rather than a limit. A title of 62 characters made of narrow words can display in full; one of 54 characters in heavy uppercase may not.

What matters more than fitting exactly is front-loading. Put the words a person is searching for at the start, so that even a truncated title still carries the match.

Google rewrites titles, and what makes a rewrite likely

Google has stated since 2021 that it generates the title shown in results and will replace the page's own title tag when it judges another version more useful. Your title tag is the strongest input, not the final output.

Rewrites become more likely when the title tag:

  • Repeats a keyword — the stuffed pattern Wallets | Leather Wallets | Buy Wallets Online almost invites replacement.
  • Is boilerplate across a catalogue, so hundreds of pages carry near-identical titles.
  • Is far too long, at which point Google often substitutes the H1.
  • Contradicts the visible page, naming something the content does not deliver.
  • Is empty or generic, such as a bare product code.

The defence is the same in every case: write a title that a person would choose, make it specific to the page, and keep it consistent with the H1.

Two rules survive every template. The brand belongs at the end, because almost nobody is searching for it at the start — and if the brand is well known enough that people do search for it, it will win that query regardless of title order. And the template must leave room for the page to be specific: a pattern that produces the same title for forty products has failed whatever its shape.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ideal title tag length?

Many search results display roughly 55-60 characters of a title tag, but usefulness and relevance matter more than an exact character count.

Should every Shopify title include the brand name?

Brand names often work best at the end of product and collection titles. The beginning should usually clarify the product, category, or primary search intent.
