What is a Magento to Shopify Plus migration?

A Magento to Shopify Plus migration moves catalogue, customer, and order data off a self-hosted Magento installation onto Shopify's hosted platform, then rebuilds the storefront and integrations on Shopify's architecture. The data transfer is the visible half; the harder half is mapping Magento concepts that have no direct Shopify equivalent — attribute sets, multi-source inventory, customer groups, and layered navigation. The risk that decides whether a migration succeeds is URL continuity: Magento and Shopify use different URL structures, so every product, category, and CMS page needs a redirect mapped before launch or the accumulated organic rankings are lost.

Magento is draining your resources.

You are spending more time managing servers, applying security patches, and fixing broken extensions than you are actually growing your business. Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is out of control.

A secure, data-perfect transition.

We handle the entire migration process. We securely port your customers, orders, products, and SEO equity to Shopify Plus, rebuilding your frontend to be significantly faster and more conversion-optimized.

How a Magento to Shopify Plus migration runs

  1. Inventory before export: We crawl the live Magento store and pull Search Console and analytics data first, so the redirect map is built from URLs that demonstrably hold traffic, links or impressions rather than from a database dump. This inventory decides the scope of everything that follows.
  2. Concept mapping: Magento models data in ways Shopify does not. Attribute sets, customer groups, multi-source inventory, tier pricing and layered navigation each need a decision: a native Shopify equivalent, a metafield structure, an app, or a deliberate change in how the business operates.
  3. Data migration with reconciliation: Products, variants, customers, order history and content move across in staged passes, each one reconciled by count and by spot-check against the source. A migration that reports success without reconciliation counts has not been verified.
  4. Redirect mapping and staging crawl: Every old URL is mapped to a single destination with no chained hops. The staging build is then crawled against that map with JavaScript disabled, confirming titles, headings, canonicals and structured data survived the rebuild.
  5. Launch and post-launch monitoring: After cutover we watch Search Console coverage, server logs and rankings for the first weeks. Missed redirects appear as 404s in the logs long before they appear as lost rankings, which is the window where they are cheap to fix.

Platform Migration Services FAQs

Will we lose our Google rankings when we move off Magento?

Ranking loss after a migration is caused by incomplete redirects, chained redirects, and rewriting page content at the same time as changing its URL — not by Shopify itself. When every URL that holds traffic or links is mapped to a single destination in one hop, and ranking pages keep their content and titles, rankings transfer. We plan the redirect map from crawl and Search Console data before any data is exported.

Which parts of a Magento store do not transfer directly?

Custom extensions do not carry over and have to be rebuilt as Shopify apps, Functions or theme code. Magento concepts without a direct Shopify equivalent need mapping decisions: attribute sets usually become metafields, customer groups become B2B company profiles or customer tags, and layered navigation becomes a Shopify filtering implementation. Order history transfers as records, but Magento's internal order workflow states do not.

Can a multi-store Magento setup become one Shopify store?

Often, yes. Shopify Markets handles multiple countries, currencies, languages and domains from a single store, which replaces most multi-store setups and is considerably cheaper to operate. A separate expansion store is only justified when catalogues, tax models or operations genuinely diverge rather than differing by price and language.

How long does a Magento to Shopify Plus migration take?

The timeline is driven by catalogue complexity and by how much custom Magento functionality has to be rebuilt, not by data volume. A catalogue with clean attributes and a small number of extensions moves considerably faster than a smaller catalogue carrying years of bespoke logic. We scope the rebuild list during the concept-mapping stage, which is when a realistic timeline becomes possible.

Is Shopify Plus actually cheaper than running Magento?

The comparison that matters is total cost of ownership, not licence against licence. Magento Open Source has no licence fee but carries hosting, security patching, upgrade cycles and the engineering time those consume. Shopify Plus has a platform fee that includes hosting, PCI compliance and platform upgrades. Whether the total is lower depends on how much engineering your current stack absorbs, which is a number your team can measure before deciding.
